1. Read the Passage
Open your Bible to Psalm 82. Read it slowly, paying attention to the setting: God stands in the divine council and brings judgment against corrupt spiritual rulers.
2. The Big Idea
Psalm 82 depicts a courtroom scene in the heavenly realm. God, the Most High, indicts the lesser elohim for ruling the nations with injustice, partiality, and oppression. Their failure leads to their eventual downfall: “You will die like men.”
This psalm explains why the world is filled with spiritual darkness and injustice: the powers over the nations have become corrupt.
3. Key Terms
- Elohim – A term that can refer to God, gods, or spiritual beings depending on context.
- Divine Council – The heavenly assembly where God presides.
- Inheritance – The nations assigned to spiritual rulers (Deut 32:8–9).
- Judgment – God’s verdict against corrupt supernatural authorities.
4. Why This Matters
Psalm 82 is the theological backbone of the New Testament’s language about:
- principalities and powers
- the “god of this world”
- the rulers of this age
- the hostile spiritual forces in the heavenly places
Jesus’ mission directly confronts these corrupt powers and begins reclaiming the nations.
